" I love the Fauves! Their art was characterized by paintings that portray intensely vivid, pure and exuberant colors. I am inspired by the intensity and boldness of the paintings of Matisse and Derain and pose to portray this boldness in glass. I choose kiln-fired glass as my personal canvas and voice. "
Alice was born into an artistic family whose father and grandfather were practicing artists. Continuing the family legacy, she is well versed in landscape composition and color. She is captivated when finding appealing combinations of elements in the everyday scene. Driving down a winding road or passing a sun drenched tree with a long cast shadow inspires her to capture the moment in her kiln fired creations.
Working off the sketches she has created, Gebhart cuts and layers luminous colored glass, specifically made for glass fusing, in a kind of collage. This is fired in a glass kiln, often 3-5 times to obtain the desired effect. Gebhart reveals the true beauty of the medium by adding dichroic glass, carbon oxide and lines of 24 karat gold.
Largely self-taught, Alice Benvie Gebhart has taken workshops with noted glass artists Peter McGrain and Roger V. Thomas. Alice's experimentation with kiln-fired glass has grown into something that stands out from the norm.
