"I am inspired by a whimsical sense of nature and the beauty of wood."
Charles Adams incorporates the personification of animal characteristics to create useable art, making available the play of the artist's mind and creativity as a part of daily use. The work has a whimsical sensibility, crafted in unique forms.
Adams strives for a complicated, rich surface, carefully choosing his wood for grain patterning and beauty, and striving for interesting variations and color. In shaping the wood, he employs the natural surprises found in the selected stock to help define the forms. The surfaces are greatly varied in color and grain.
Adams has an extensive, versatile art training in a variety of media and substantial experience as a woodworker. He has a BFA from Edinboro University, Pa. in 1976, and an MFA in 1984 from the University of Delaware. For the past five years, Adams has been creating and developing a new body of work, combining his artistic sensibility and extensive skills as a woodworker.
