Emilia Arana

"My work is lyrical and filled with movement, much related to the music studies in my life before turning to painting. A sense of landscape and place often imbues the work."

Emilia Arana has experienced two important influences in her life. As a native of Arizona, her vision is informed by that landscape. In addition, the artist's twenty five years of classical piano studies has created an affinity for abstract painting. Arana needs to find the lyricism of music in her paintings and her process is a type of alchemy that invites multiple interpretations.

Whether working in oil or acrylic, Emilia Arana's approach is one of total spontaneity. With each painting, Arana explores layering, destruction, and rebuilding and works to bring the painting surface to a requisite complexity while maintaining an appearance of ease.

Emilia Arana received a master's degree in art history, with an emphasis in Mexican colonial art of the 18th century.
