"I create functional and sculptural ceramic pieces with painterly glazed surfaces that explore ideas of lushness, time, and grace."
Ceramic artist Farraday Newsome is known for her exuberantly colorful, luscious forms and surfaces. She works from her home studio in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, using a red terra-cotta clay and rich painterly glazes inspired by the lively beauty of nature.
Newsome makes her pieces one at a time, using combinations of wheel-thrown and hand-built wet clay elements. Her brilliant, unusually rich surfaces achieve their depth of color through the many layers of carefully brushed translucent glazes.
Farraday Newsome received her graduate degree in art, with a ceramics emphasis, from San Francisco State University in 1987. Her father was a ceramic artist with a degree from Alfred State University in New York, and her grandmother was a professional oil painter. Newsome has worked as a full-time ceramic studio artist for over twenty years.
