�These paintings refer to places real and imagined. In doing my work, I try to become a vehicle or an open channel for visual impressions which seem to come from the present and very familiar and also from the near and distant past. Drawing and painting are one in the same for me in this regard.�

As landscapes emerge from the reflective multi-layered surfaces of John Berens� paintings, the viewer is immersed within a poetic realm of our own observable world.

�My work can evoke memory or personal associations in the viewer. I like to think its impressionistic qualities can bypass the self-conscious intellect and move the viewer�s thoughts towards reflection or stillness or the simple condition of appreciating beauty.�
