John Boak

"All objects have voices and secrets. Since childhood I have been collecting, making, painting and assembling objects, all the while coaxing from them their songs, symbols and secrets."

Living as we do in a world of highly-refined and powerful objects, we are trained to approach unknown objects as if their meaning will soon be revealed. Boak's sculptures encourage the anticipation of function and meaning. The glyphs are Boak's own; he has drawn and collected them for over thirty years. These sculptures begin in Boak's notebooks. He often creates drawings on hikes in the mountains, working in a small notebook with colored pencils. In his studio, he creates digital paintings of the sculptures, and accompanying dimension drawings to fabricate the various pieces. He uses airbrush and paintbrush to paint the pieces before assembly.
