Mark Bryan

"I am often amazed at the world I find myself in. The world feels limitless, mysterious, wonderful, and dangerous. It feels like a place of all possibilities."

This perspective inspires Mark Bryan’s paintings. He’s fascinated by images that contrast the beauty of the natural world with our predicament in this chaotic time. Humor plays a large role in his work, allowing him to keep perspective on subject matter that is naturally dark and full of irony.

His paintings — acrylic or oil paint on wood panels — take the form of altars or icons, especially influenced by the time he spent as a student in Los Angeles, where he was introduced to Chicano culture, Catholic and folk arts, and the Mexican Muralists. Making it clear that his work, while based on broad themes, is also very much influenced by personal experience.
