Steve Sells and Michael Kane
Kane and Sells Studio
"We strive to create work that reflects the organics of nature and to understand what balance is in that moment you experience a work of art. That moment of peace is the magic of art. "
Michael Kane and Steve Sells are inspired by the Earth's natural spirit. The patterns of wood grain, reeds at a river's edge or ripples on the surface of water become images reflected in the organic patterns of Shibori. The voice of this well-known team of artists speaks of these natural energies through their work.
Self taught, Kane and Sells utilize the Japanese dyeing techniques of Arashi Shibori (pole wrapping), and Itajimi Shibori (board clamping). They create each piece by hand-dyeing, discharging, airbrushing using 100 percent silk, often adding other techniques to achieve their goal. The construction is pieced, layered, or appliqued.
Their 22 year studio rests on a wildlife habitat.
