Kim Eubank and Will Armstrong
The Metal Quilt
"I have always loved the interplay of shapes. I use my background in graphic design to create each composition.
Enamel is a lustrous, luminous, and wonderfully challenging medium. I love the sensuous melting of hot glass on cold, hard copper. The kiln work can be exhausting, but you can't get really beautiful work without a little suffering.
Kim Eubank and Will Armstrong call their work the "Metal Quilt." They are influenced by the geometric greats: Mondrian, Mark Rothko, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the architect Hundertwasser. Armstrong's background in graphic design is used to create the composition of each piece. Eubank draws from her years in jewelry making to create the many individual enameled tiles that comprise each piece.
Eubank and Armstrong construct their wall hangings from enameled copper. Armstrong hand cuts each piece from a roll of 22-gauge coiled copper. He designs the layout in bare copper on a wooden canvas. Eubank individually enamels each piece by sifting dry, powdered glass onto the copper and firing them in a 1,500 degree kiln. The mounting method used makes each piece lightweight enough to hang on any wall.
The artists met and trained at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Eubank has a B.A. in crafts, specializing in jewelry and glass, and has stretched the limits of traditional enameling through experimentation and countless hours of practice. Armstrong has a B.A. in illustration and graphic design, and also draws from his background as a professional framer, a job he held during college.
