"Spinney"

Acrylic Painting

Created by Joan Gold
One of a Kind
The paintings in the artist's "Piante" series are painted on heavy etching paper with acrylics, and some collage elements are applied afterward. They are then covered with a transparent acrylic layer, which has some tooth. This provides a surface receptive to charcoal, graphite, and oil and powder pastels, which enrich the design, heighten the color, and make them mixed-media works. They are signed and are not framed. These pieces will require framing after purchase. The impetus for these works comes from a recollection of childhood. In the house where the artist lived from the time she was three years old until she was nine, she had a basement playroom. It was an unfinished basement with rough unattractive walls. Her mother attempted to upgrade the look of this space by pasting to the walls wallpaper samples that she got from the house painter who lived next door. There were stripes, paisleys, plaids, and of flowers -- all kinds of colors and patterns, impossible to coordinate into any sort of harmony.

About this Artist

Joan Gold

"The focus of my work is luminous color. There is no hidden meaning, nothing to understand other than what the eye perceives."

Painter Joan Gold creates pieces that portray harmony, beauty, balance, and serenity. Using the interplay between light and color, Gold describes mood and feeling, and surrounds the viewer with the joy that she finds in her life and work.

A giclee by Gold is an original digital fine art print. Each piece requires a lengthy, meticulous operation starting with paintings made in her studio using traditional materials. Her abstract and minimal mixed media paintings are scanned, taken apart and reworked as digital files, then printed using archival pigment inks on a fine acid-free paper.

Brooklyn-born abstract painter Joan Gold received her art education at The Cooper Union and The Brooklyn Museum in New York City, and at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Caracas. In 1955 she was awarded a U.S. State Department fellowship to paint and study in Venezuela. She remained there for twenty-four years and retired as associate professor of The Metropolitana University of Venezuela.
