About this Artist

Bernadette Mahfood

Bringing the precision of a mathematician and the flair of a poet to her work, Bernadette Mahfood began making glass beads in 1987. Today, she is recognized as a pioneer in the American glass beadmaking movement.

Mahfood draws on techniques ancient and modern to create flameworked and kiln-formed beads. To make the lampworked beads, she heats a soda-lime glass rod in the flame of a torch, winding the molten glass around a metal wire, then she shapes, decorates, anneals and cools the bead. For kiln-formed work, she cuts and layers flat glass before firing it in the kiln. In either case, the brilliance of the resulting colors and forms enhances the purity of Mahfood's original jewelry designs.
