About this Artist

David Russell

"It was in the glass studio that I found the ultimate molten material, hot glass.I was captivated by its nature and became determined to start down the long road of making beautiful objects from glass."

David's current body of work has deep roots in the history of Italian glass making. these roots date back to the renaissance when technical virtuosity of Italian glassblowers was at its zenith and that skill level set the pace for the rest of the glass world for many decades to come.

Early in his glassblowing experience, David became fascinated that techniques pioneered during the 1500's and the 1600's could still be so challenging to master and so fascinating to the modern eye. so David began immersing himself in the techniques that came to define that era in glass. incalmo, reticello and filligrana require many years to master and yield complex patterns and visually stunning results. these techniques along with pristine glass clarity have become a hallmark of David's glass art.

Seeking a career that utilizes his hands and was not in a typical office setting, David found himself at the Penland school of crafts in 1996. Over the next five years David was able to study with Bill Worcester, Jack Wax, Gianni Toso, Jose Chardiet, Billy Bernstien, Tom Farbanish and Richard Ritter. In 1999, David studied with Czech glass master Petr Novotny at the Pilchuck glass school . From 2001- 2002, David was assistant to Ken Pieper. David opened his own studio in S.C in 2004.
