"Glass Candleholder: Red Stripe"

Art Glass Candleholder

Created by Ed Edwards
This red candleholder is created by building a lattice of thin strips of glass that form an open weave basket when the lattice is fused and slumped. The bottom layer of glass strips is transparent red. The top layer has alternating strips of white, and streaky red and white opaque glass. The streaks in the red glass include hints of burgundy and orange. The candleholder has a solid clear bottom. The candlelight shines through the openings and is refracted as it passes through the glass strips. A votive candle is provided. Each piece is unique and will vary from the picture shown.

About this Artist

Ed Edwards

"My work explores the liquid nature of glass, allowing it to flow or fold, and then freezing it at the moment the glass reaches the desired shape."

Glass artist Ed Edwards is interested in creating pieces of glass that take advantage of the liquid appearance, transparency, and reflective nature of glass. Designing each piece so that it flows outside of the mold, Edwards uses the outer edge of his bowls as legs that hold the bowl above the table's surface.

Edwards begins each piece by fusing the multiple layers of base glass and design elements together as a flat piece. He then creates a custom mold for each piece that allows the glass to fold and flow as it slumps. By cooling the piece at the right moment, Edwards freezes it in the desired form.

Originally trained as a stained glass artist, Edwards transitioned to fused glass for a commission and has continued to develop his unique perspective and style.
