Sedona Vase

Art Glass Vase

Customer Rating:
40 stars out of 50
The impressionistic landscape design of the Sedona vase is begun by sifting on many layers of glass powder. We then use multiple colors of glass in a variety of forms, powder, custom mixes of frit, and stringer. The design is embedded in the surface of the glass during the blowing process to creates a highly textured piece. The final step is to softly iridize the surface with a technique adopted from the studios of the early 1900's.

About this Artist

John & Heather Fields

"I feel very lucky to be doing the work that I love. For me, glassblowing is the perfect combination of art and sports. The physical nature of the process helps keep me engaged during the creation of a piece and sheer frustration motivates me to continue to create."

When John says that he was "saved" in church as a kid he's referring to the fact that he was surrounded by "Tiffany" stained glass windows which fueled his imagination and helped him survive the long services. This exposure early on has led to a life long fascination with glass, color, and light.

John creates his work in the off hand tradition of glassblowing. The inherent layering process of glassblowing allows him to apply color and design components from the background forward. By leaving some clear "windows" through the glass to the first layer and encouraging the colors to interface and react with one another John is able to create the impression of depth and painterly design.

After working many years crafting Tiffany reproduction windows, John took a beginning glass blowing class at Pratt in early 1994, and by years end he had constructed a glassblowing studio in N. Portland. Heather joined the studio in 1995. Her years of experience as a production glass blower in the historic Jamestown glass house was a welcome addition to the shop. With a big grin, John admits to learning some "tricks of the trade" from Heather, but remains a largely self taught glass artist.

Beautifully done
The vase is definitely a work of art, however, wish I could get an interior light to enhance the beauty as shown on your photo to market the vase.

Beautiful
The vase is absolutely lovely. For those who are disappointed in the darkness of the color we found that problem can be easily overcome by dropping in a small battery operated candle (tea light size). The inner glow it produces is beautiful.

Best under direct light
I had been so looking forward to rec'g this vase. It is a beautiful vase but like the other reviewer, I agree that in reality it looks a bit dull not as vibrant as the photo. When sunlight hits it directly it looks very beautiful but unless you are going to put it in direct light, I would pass on this one.

Colors
I like the vase and it fits in well with our decor. My disappointment was that the colors are so radiant in the picture and are not so bright when you see the vase in your home. I guess the lighting required for the picture skewed the my expectatiions about the vibrancy of the color in the vase. This should be noted somewhere. Otherwise, we are enjoying the vase and it's in a very nice focal area.

Beautiful vase
It is a beautiful art object; I have it glorifying a part of my Kitchen bay-window where the sun does justice to this vase. I love this vase.

Very Beautiful!
This vase is more beautiful than pictured! The outside of the vase is very iridescent giving the overall scene a gorgeous glow and depth! It reminds one of heavenly sunset! You won't be disappointed!

Intriguing
The irridescent finish diminishes the brightness of the colors. Nevertheless, this piece is very eye catching and intriguing to those who admire it in my office.

beautiful colors and texture
The oblong shape of this vase is excellent for display on a sideboard or narrow table. Displays well under both natural and artificial light.
