About this Artist

Michael Ulschak

"I seek to create pathways across the carved landscapes of my work for eyes, hands, and light to travel."

Initially attracted to the fire and fluidity of hot glass processes, artist Michael Ulschak gradually moved towards the measured rhythm of cold processes and carving. Now, the artist creates forms in the hot shop by carefully selecting colors and shapes to later be enhanced. When his pieces have cooled to room temperature, the real strategizing, for Ulschak, begins. The pieces are carved using diamond wheels to create texture and pattern. It is through this altering of the surface that Ulschak allows the glass to reveal its radiance.

Michael Ulschak discovered hot glass while living in Washington DC in 2002. After a year of night and weekend classes at a local studio, Ulschak moved to Tennessee to attend the Appalachian Center for Craft. He studied full time under Curtiss Brock at the Craft Center, which provided the focus and experience necessary to develop his current aesthetic.
