A hand-forged steel trunk supports a recessed 1.5" thick polished marble tabletop in this one-of-a-kind occasional table. The trunk, leaves and roots are forged with a variety of welding processes, then tapered and textured with hand tools. The steel is wire-wheeled to a soft finish, and protected with clear lacquer.

"If someone approaches one of my pieces, after being told it is steel, and taps on a branch or tries to move a leaf or squeeze a petal, I have an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. It is this reaction to my work that inspires me to push the envelope a little bit further."

Originality and superior workmanship are features of the work created by Bill Masterpool, a metal artist with an artistic language all his own. Inspiration from nature is the driving force that generates most of Masterpool's work, yet his desire to explore new design methods reveals an innate ability to respond to a wide range of market demands: from innovative, industrial, contemporary, and simple geometric ornamentation, to the organic sculptural designs for which he has become known.

With a background in structural welding, Masterpool is as attentive to the structure and function of his pieces as he is to the aesthetic effect. This approach was recognized by NOMMA in 2005 when he received the Ernest Wiemann Top Job Gold Award for a granite and forged-steel coffee table, and at the 2004 Western Design Conference, where he received a special award for a highly detailed forged-steel branch mirror, a piece that has since been featured in ads by Western Interior Design magazine and Teton Home and Living magazine in connection with their 2006 and 2007 Western Design Conferences.
