About this Artist

Ivana George

"I believe in the power of the sublime photograph to inspire appreciation of the natural world and to encourage support for conservation of wild places and public green spaces. This belief motivates my art practice."

Photographer Ivana George creates images with visual drama, esthetic balance, and beautiful lighting. Driven by passions for the natural world and environmental conservation, George has hiked mountains, kayaked rivers, climbed vertical cliffs, and cycled through forests with her camera on her back. Using medium and large format infrared film and infrared filters, Ivana George is able to print large and detailed photographs, all with the otherworld characteristics of infrared photography.

The amount of infrared light changes dramatically at various latitudes on the globe and different subjects reflect infrared light in varying amounts. Since infrared photography relies on light rays that the human eye cannot see, the images from every journey provide discoveries in the darkroom. This exciting and surprising process drives Ivana George to work in this medium.

Ivana George holds an M.F.A. in visual art from the School of the Museum of Fine Art and a B.F.A. in visual art from Guilford College. Ten percent of the photographer's profits each year are donated to non-profit organizations that work to protect the environment.
