The bird figures on this piece are cast stoneware clay finished in acrylic paint with a deep velvety matte finish. The shelf they sit on and the wall behind them is made from wood which is also finished with acrylic. Wood parts have a lightly distressed patina sealed under a semi gloss varnish. The clock movement is battery operated and the piece can be wall hung or placed on a desktop.

"My goal in working with ceramics is to take the often boring or mundane-looking birdhouse and raise it to a more artistic level."

Toby Atticus Fraley builds stoneware birdhouses with both form and function in mind. His main goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing piece which can also stand alone as a sculptural form.

The birdhouses he builds are made from stoneware clay fired to around 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. He constructs them with slabs, press-molded and slip-cast clay and uses molds he designs and builds himself. Each birdhouse is finished by firing engobe onto its surface. The engobe and the high firing temperature together make a highly durable surface which can withstand any weather conditions.
