Tatiana Hunter

"Unloading the kiln brings surprise and excitement. I ponder each piece. Those destined for further luster receive special attention. I carefully select my brushes—some designed for flowing swaths of 23k gold or platinum, others for delicate grace notes. I dip the first brush into one of the viscous solutions and begin. Before long I am lost in the music of my brushstrokes."

Known for her 23k gold and palladium glazes, Tatiana Hunter brings opulence into your every day through her luxurious, functional ceramics. Each piece has to sing, which can only happen when the artist is attuned to the medium. The authenticity, truth, and beauty of her work evolves from a heartfelt process, and the allure of each collection comes from its effortless elegance.

Hunter works in conceptual series that emanate extraordinary energy and often tell a story. She creates her pieces by hand on a potter's wheel, free of molds and templates. After firing at 2,300 degrees in a large kiln, she carefully anoints her work with 23k gold and palladium, and refires until the precious metals anneal to the glaze on the fired ceramic piece.

Hunter earned a B.A. in ceramics from the University of Arizona in 1972. Included in her repertoire are commissions for the Dalai Lama, Oprah Winfrey, the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, and the HeartMath Institute in Boulder Creek, CA. She currently lives in New Mexico, where she is continually inspired by the ever-changing landscape.
