"Two-Tiered Black Box"

Ceramic Box

Created by Sequoia Miller
One of a Kind
This is a wheel thrown ceramic box. The elements were thrown individually, then altered off round and assembled as the clay dried. There are two storage areas - the lower and central volumes, with the upper volume serving as a knob. This somber piece is suitable for storage of consumables, personal effects, or as a funerary urn. The exterior is satin black, with subtle speckles coming through from the clay. The interior is glazed with a rust-orange shino-type glaze. There is no decoration or brushwork on the surface, though finger marks from the glazing process are evident. It is stamped 'SQ'.
Dimensions: 10.0in H x 6.5in W x 6.5in D

About this Artist

Sequoia Miller

"I'm attracted to the idea of practice--attentive repetition toward something small as a way to understand something universal."

Ceramic artist Sequoia Miller asserts that people don't actually buy pots--they buy the exploration, of which the pot is an artifact. He says his work as a potter is both to make pots, and to continue his exploration of what pottery is.

Miller began his pursuit of becoming a potter in 1993. His ceramics education unfolded over a series of workshops with his favorite contemporary potters at Penland, Haystack, and other craft schools during the mid 1990s. In 1995, Miller relocated to the Pacific Northwest and set up a small pottery shop in an abandoned boat shack. Three years later, he became a studio potter full time. Today, Miller exhibits and sells his work nationally and teaches pottery workshops regularly.
