Brightly colored whimsical and functional pieces. Plaster molds are made from clay models that Palmer designs. They are then slipcast with low-fire earthenware clay, painted with underglazes, slips, and fired to cone 06. Glazes are unleaded.

About this Artist

Alison Palmer

"My work celebrates the joy of life. The pieces are functional and designed for those special occasions when everyday tableware will just not do. I need to see forms in three dimensions and, of course, the challenge is to interpret those forms with the tools at hand. "

Alison Palmer is always creating something new and the ideas never seem to run out. Whether it be in earthenware, stoneware, wood or plaster there is always something new just around the corner - usually whimsical, usually colorful, and never without a certain sense of humor

After 30 years in ceramics, Alison still gets great enjoyment out of the process of creating new pieces. From the inception of the original idea, through the technical processes (including the making of molds), to her favorite part - working with color. Alison is always thinking ahead and is constantly using her artistic vision to explore and interpret.

Alison attended Kansas City Art Institute as well as the California College of Arts and Crafts where she received her BFA in ceramics. She studied with Viola Frey.

Whimsical but a bit impractical
With slippery butter in the dish the top half gets slick and easy to drop.I worry that it will break before too long.Love the whimsy and brightness of the dish.Would have liked it a bit smaller and therefore easier to handle.

Cat Butter Dish Has Everyone Meowing
It seems silly to talk so favorably about a butter dish but this cat ceramic one is very unique. It draws comments from everyone at the table and you can't help but smile when you look at it. The black and white stripes and the kitty on its side are striking. It is large enough that you can fit different sizes of butter. So it's both useful and artful.

Wonderful gift!
This kitty butter dish is just what I wanted for my cat stuff collector friend. It's so playful and kitty-like. The top fits perfectly on the dish part and the whole piece is decorated and finished perfectly. I have to wait a month to gift it - that will be hard because it is so perfect. And fun. Thank you to the artist for making it and to Artful Home for showing it to me.
