"Pinwheel Porcelain Plate"

Ceramic Plate

Created by Carol Barclay
A whorl of vibrantly colored forms decorate these irresistible plates. The artist mixes a palette of clay stains with fine porcelain slip, and uses the resulting shades to paint patterns on a very thin slab of porcelain. Next, she cuts shapes from this colorful field and inlays them on pure porcelain squares. Then the pieces are given a rim, carefully dried, bisque fired, sanded, glazed and fired again. Sold individually.

The porcelain plates are food safe, and can be used in the microwave, and cleaned in the dishwasher. Each plate is individually made, with its own pattern of color and form, so using it can be a daily delight. Make a caprese salad on it, or serve cheese and crackers or an array of yummy cookies. If you choose a collection of these plates, they would garner much admiration as salad or dessert or luncheon plates.

About this Artist

Carol Barclay

"I love the texture and the coolness of clay, the opportunity to work with my body as well as my mind, and I'm energized by the many possibilities of the material. I relish the privilege of making things that others will cherish, take into their homes, and treasure for generations."

Carol Barclay's work in white clay is recognizable by its undulating organic design. In the course of more than three decades in the studio, Barclay has learned how to gently coax the soft clay into graceful whirls and elegant constructions. Her forms seem to freeze a moment of fluidity, with references to flowing fabric, sea forms and garden blooms. Barclay first designs organic shapes of white clay, then sculpts, carves and combines them to create elegant, visually exciting sculptural forms.
