"Summer Glow"

Colorful, hand built, footed, stoneware vase with strong impressed designs. Each vase is decorated in a patchwork style and no two are exactly alike. Wills employs her favorite graphic textures, botantical designs, handmade stamps, vintage impressions and slips. The outside surface is a warm matte orange with oxides accenting the deeper areas of texture. The inside is finished with a dark brown glaze. The piece has a narrow footprint which fits nicely on a shelf or mantle. Reed handles are dyed and hand tied to accent the piece. Signed on the bottom.

"I enjoy the entire process involved in creating ceramic artwork. Part craftsmanship, part chemistry, part fire, and toss in an element of surprise, it all makes my studio time a rewarding experience."

Susan Wills creates hand built and extruded ceramic pieces that are functional and food safe, as well as decorative. Working predominantly with high fire stoneware, the artist uses a variety of unique glazes and slips to build interest and add texture to the clay surface. Each piece is fired twice, once to temper the ware for glazing, then a second time to over 2300° F in a natural gas kiln. Sturdy rattan handles made of imported reed and binding cane provide the final touch. Each reed is dyed to achieve a beautiful dark tone and then hand tied to accent each finished piece.
