Ceramic Wall Art

Created by Ken Drolet
One of a Kind
In Peru they have a word for resting place, arequipa. Do we all not long for such a place, even for a little while? We can see ourselves lounging on a sea of grass or beside a quiet stream. This is a tranquil place, a place where our bodies relax and our minds are set free. The sculpture is in three sections, but mounted in such a way as to look like a single work. A mounting template is provided.

About this Artist

Ken Drolet

"I am fascinated with shapes, colors, and textures. I love combining them in a work that reflects the world as I see it, with grace, beauty and the illusion of movement."

Ceramic artist, Ken Drolet, creates one-of-a-kind abstract sculptures in his studio in the Arizona desert. He has always been drawn to intent study of textures and shapes in the natural and human-made environment. With these influences he creates pieces that are a journey through his private world, ending in a destination to be shared by others.

Most pieces are hand built from slabs of clay. He begins by rolling out a sheet of clay. It is then cut, formed, shaped, carved, incised, or added to as the final work takes shape. Over several days, the work is refined and modified as clay and artist have a dialogue to create the best result. Often Ken may incorporate an element, such as a spiraling clay ribbon, to add a sense of motion to the work. To provide richness in contrast, he may leave a portion of the raw clay exposed or apply paint on areas of a fired piece.

Though previously an oil and pastel artist, then later a furniture maker, working with the organic medium of clay provides a deep connection to nature Ken can no longer live without. He says that the clay talks to him. There is a feeling of harmony with the medium. It is not just Ken trying to make something out of the material, but the material adding its own spirit to what it will become.
