John Maggiotto
"I explore contemporary issues of persona with new materials in photography."
Examining the world through popular media, John Maggiotto attempts with his camera to decipher the codes and symbols inherent in television imagery. His recent work focuses specifically on two themes, World War II and nature.
Maggiotto's compelling imagery is achieved with highly innovative and unusual methods and techniques. He first collects his materials: images from television and art books, and marble from a quarry near his home. Then he combines the two by painting a photosensitive emulsion onto the marble, which allows a print to be made directly on the hard stone. The finished work is textural and painterly, explorative and meditative.
