"Snake on a Pole"

Color Photograph

Created by Maurine Sutter
From the artist's series, "The Inflatables'', this photograph is an archival pigment print on cotton rag watercolor paper.

The finished image is a multi step process that includes both traditional darkroom techniques as well as museum quality contemporary ink jet output. Recorded on a black and white infrared film which is developed and printed by hand by the artist, the small matte surface prints are then hand tinted. This silver gelatin print with hand applied color is then scanned to allow for further refinement using editing software. Prints are then made using archival inks and cotton rag papers. Limited edition of 50.

About this Artist

Maurine Sutter

"I believe strongly in the power and meaning of exceptional photographs, and I have learned these are not easy to make. Being involved with the medium has been an important part of my life and continues to both fascinate and thrill me. The digital revolution has changed much about the way we make images. I strive to remain true to the essential time-honored traditions while embracing change."

Photographer Maurine Sutter was introduced to the traditional black and white darkroom in college by noted photographer Harold Feinstein and has pursued the medium as a joyous experience ever since. Showing amazing versatility in her work, Sutter records images from deserted beaches on Cape Cod and palatial Berkshire estates to plastic beach toys and roadside stands.

A skilled printer, Maurine Sutter studied printmaking in the traditional darkroom, and then added digital techniques to her repertoire. At times she combines the best of these two distinctly different ways of making photographs to create her work in a unique style. Her goal when printing is to produce a finished photograph with rich, tonal separations using the highest quality materials available.

With degrees including a Bachelor and Master of Fine Art in Photography, Sutter has studied with Jerome Liebling, Nicholas Nixon, and William Christianberry among others. She credits her early training as key in helping her make a smooth transition into the digital arena. One major influence on her work was being an artist-in-residence at one of the historic dune shacks in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
