About this Artist

Dar Spain

"I am inspired by encounters with time, season, place and the visual experience of natural elements. Working with both camera and brush is a personally satisfying way of exploring these realms,"

Initially, Dar Spain began taking photographs to use as references for paintings and drawings. This new medium opened other creative avenues and her artistic direction changed. She works with landscape and architectural subjects, as well as, with studio compositions. She finds that the sensibility or mood of an image which evolves as she is working inspires her more than literal documentation.

Spain's hand colored gelatin silver prints are printed on matte surface paper. Oil paint and photo oil colors are applied in layers, bringing a luminous quality to the image. Recently, she has begun using watercolor to color black and white pigment prints.

The way Dar Spain uses watercolor to paint on pigment print photographs is a process she has developed by working with the two media. Her formal art education includes a BA in Art with an emphasis in painting and an MA in Photography.
