About this Artist

Candiss Cole

"Clothing should enhance the body, not hide it. It is meant to adorn and suggest, to tease and entice, to be soft and above all, comfortable."

Candiss Cole was born into a Dutch Reformed Community in Upstate New York, and learned to weave from her Paternal Grandmother. She made her first garment at the age of five. Her passion for textiles has taken her all over the world and continues to guide her on a path of creating new and exciting fabrics each year. In 2003, she married Rodger Footitt. His training in the Textile Industry, both here and in England has added a new dimension to the business. Together they blend the traditions of textiles into a new and exciting vision for today.

Both Candiss and Rodger work side by side on all phases of the process. Starting with yarns or fabrics, they dye and weave Silk Ikat and Silk Ikat-Shibori into fabrics, which are then cut and sewn into garments. Their new collection of Felted pieces starts with Industrially Needle Felted Fabrics that they then manipulate into a new form through color and heat. Their fabrics are distinctive and versatile as well as wearable.

Candiss began in Norway, working with designers until 1975. Moving to the US in 1976, she joined the ACC and has exhibited for 33 years. Her training is on-going. Working with Jack Lenor Larsen, Yoshiko Wada, Catherine Ellis, Virginia Davis and Jane Dunnewold. Rodger began in the Textile Mills of Macclesfield England at the end of the Silk Road. His extensive knowledge of color and his ability to create textile machinery from scratch has added a new dimension to their shared passion.
