The Structures series explores the human desire for connection and the barriers we erect to protect our vulnerabilities when reaching out to others.

Materials and Techniques: Cotton fabric hand dyed by the artist, cotton batting, cotton thread. Free hand cut. Pieced and quilted on a home sewing machine.

To care for this artwork never display it in strong ultra violet radiation, such as direct sunlight. To clean the work, cover it with a light screen and vacuum.

Lisa Call

"My abstract textile paintings are informed by many elements: my love of the colors and geological forms of the Southwest, repetition, pattern, and an attraction to human-made structures for containment, such as fences and stone walls."

Lisa Call works in series, exploring themes of interest in great depth. Color is of primary importance and is combined, intuitively, in unexpected ways, employing a unique palette of cotton fabrics she hand dyes. She is drawn to textiles by the tactile nature of the medium, and is intrigued by the flexibility of woven fabric in contrast to its underlying rigid grid construction.

Call manipulates sections of pre-constructed color, versus applying pigment in small brush strokes, to create each composition. Individual elements are cut freehand and placed onto a flannel-covered studio wall, where she works improvisationally, designing, constructing, and refining the lines and shapes in the piece. Extensive stitching on the surface adds rich texture to the finished work.
