About this Artist

Dolan Geiman

"I collect like a scientist, I talk like a preacher, I sing like a sailor, and I make art like a farmer, planting ideas and getting my hands dirty every day."

Working from an industrial warehouse on Chicago's South side, Dolan Geiman attempts to capture the images and sentiments of his Southern upbringing in painting, collage, silkscreen, and found object assemblage. Blending rural iconography with contemporary techniques, Geiman's work exemplifies his artistic tagline--Contemporary Art with a Southern Accent.

Descending from a long-line of creative explorers and recycling gurus, Geiman's original artwork uses almost 100% recycled materials, from salvaged billboards and sugar sacks to hand-cut papers from vintage outdoors magazines. Works range from intimate collages under glass to large-scale silkscreen paintings on wood, presenting a body of work that is nostalgic, textural, and infused with both folk and pop art traditions. A green artist and business, Geiman works from a sustainably renovated warehouse in Chicago, where he collects and organizes a list of supplies that reads like the contents of a 1950's thrift shop.

Trained mostly by his mother, a watercolor artist born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Geiman attributes his desire to create to her constant encouragement. Added to this mix was his experience growing up with a father who worked for the Forest Service, allowing Geiman to spend his summers with his brother and sister exploring the forests of western Virginia.

Wonderful piece
I originally purchased this thinking it would look nice in the guest bathroom of our vacation house. As soon as I saw it in person I knew I wanted it where I could see it everyday. So now it is in our apartment in the master bath next to the mirror. It has an arresting serenity to it, yet also has many embedded visual surprises. It is not just a pretty picture of a woodpecker on a tree, although it is that, it is also more. It comes on chunky wood blocks, substantial and textured. Nice.It is a special piece. I don't believe I will ever tire of looking at it.
