Helen Vaughn

"My aim as a painter is to bring to life a slice of the world as I experience it. Light, color and form are my vocabulary."

Helen Vaughn's prints come from her original paintings in oil and pastels. Her favorites subjects are landscapes or solitary women in interior settings. Her painting style is representational, and she gives detailed attention to the composition and value elements of each piece. She begins with photographs or sketches and lays out her ideas for a painting before even reaching for her brushes.

She is continually aware of the properties of light, color and shadow and how they impact her own sense of time and place. She is fascinated with these visual elements and how her own emotions become a part of each painting. Still, when a painting is completed she believes that it must stand or fall on its own.
