Montpellier Walking

Giclée Print

Created by John Denning
this item has not yet been reviewed
Montpellier is a French city on the Mediterranean where the artist's daughter lives. One of the photos he took of people walking through the old town was incorporated into this piece, as was an old, peeling wall, and patterns on the dress of a visitor to his Sonoma studio.

Denning has created a captivating and timely collection of archival digital prints on aluminum, paper and silk. By sourcing, deconstructing and reinterpreting compositions, the artist produces original works of art that are full of unexpected surprises. His process is labor-intensive and often obsessive, as he produces surreal photomontages by layering hundreds of fragmented images from found objects, photographs, paintings and drawings.

Denning works with high-quality printing studio to produce richly saturated prints on archival paper that are exactly color-matched to his original work. Limited edition of 10.

About this Artist

John Denning

"I draw from a great variety of sources: my own photographs and paintings, drawings done from life and directly on the computer, as well as clippings and digital files gathered over my adult life. My artwork is composed from my life experiences, inner and outer. I dream in and through my work and in this way my dreams are shared. "

John Denning's paintings and prints explore the formal and graphic possibilities of color and form in relation to human and animal figures. He is particularly fascinated with the way one area of color, whether solid, blended, or textured, can modify or alter the meaning of the whole--a kind of visual music.

Denning investigates the formal possibilities of his art in a spirit of passionate exploration. Works are both intimate and evocative. He spends countless hours on each piece, combining various media as a means to an artistic end. Through the layering of photographs, sketches, fragments of his paintings, and found objects, Denning creates complex compositions that are both sophisticated and engaging.

John Denning was formally trained at The Los Angeles Art School in the 1950s, where he graduated with honors. He is essentially self-taught in regards to digital art, where he combines elements of both two- and three-dimensional material. Denning combines the disciplines of photography, computer graphics, collage, and painting, portraying a vibrant exploration of the complexities of the digital medium.
