About this Artist

Sara Post

"Everything in my artwork-ideas, materials, color, form, placement-seems to happen in its own time. I usually have to wait, occasionally trying to follow along or intersect with what's going on in a wider, mostly invisible, world. Drinking tea, walking around are integral parts of this process."

Sara Post's artwork explores the close at hand. Her ceramic wall works juxtapose patterns with quiet space in warm, glowing colors. Her oil and wax paintings are largely abstract references to plants, garden plots, fields or house plans. Her interest in pattern has recently led her to fabric design.

Oil and cold wax paintings are multi-layered abstractions and may include monotype collage elements, oil stick, powdered pigments, transfers and incised lines. Watercolors are abstract botanicals painted on Arches watercolor paper. Ceramic wall works are made from hand cut slabs, glazed, painted with studio pigments, etched and fired before assembly on a wood backing. Pigment prints from oil and wax or watercolor originals are printed with archival inks on Hahnemuhle photo rag paper.

Post studied ceramics at Northern Arizona University. She and husband Thomas Post operated T.S. Post Ceramics in Davis, California from 1981-2005, producing highly decorative functional ware and tile. Sara turned to ceramic wall works in 2006 and two years later began her current work, including oil and cold wax mixed media painting, watercolor painting and printmaking. She is an instructor at the Davis Art Center in Davis, California and curates exhibits for the art center's Tsao Gallery and for the gallery at The Artery, also in Davis.
