Robert Steinem

"I enjoy taking the eye for a ride. This ride transports the viewer above and below the surface of the canvas, most notably in my leaf and water paintings. "

In Robert Steinem's New England village, there is an ugly little industrial canal that turns magical once a year. Each year, when the locals see Steinem walking with his camera, they call out as they drive by, "What the heck do you see in that thing?" His leaf and water paintings are what the artist sees.

As a legally blind artist, Robert Steinem had special magnifying glasses made by an optometrist, and he rebuilt his easel to be strong enough to stand on. For the details in his paintings, Steinem works with his nose nearly on the canvas

Steinem paints using a loose realism and is self-taught.
