"Each of my pieces represents a resolution of chaos, where I strive to render a single thing from many parts. "

Laird Campbell says the making of his artwork is like turning "solid" into "fluid" and then painting with it.

Campbell begins by cutting and re-cutting pieces of wood, arranging and rearranging them to discover the fractal contours that direct him to the resolution of a "picture." Once assembled, he works the surface, applying paint, and sanding to expose existing grains. His finished piece is then preserved with a thin layer of wax.

Campbell was born in Scotland, where his earliest influences were the applied arts, interiors, and public art. These enthusiasms fused when he arrived in Canada and began work in Exhibition and Displays as Montreal prepared for Expo '67. Since then he has worked in photography, mixed media and, inspired by his decade-long residence in a decaying mill town, salvaged wood.
