"Geoscape Ring"

Gold & Silver Ring

Created by Marne Ryan
Marne Ryan's rings are hand fabricated. The texture of the metal is created by using a torch to create surface patterns, and by using a rolling mill to roll patterns into the metal. After several sheets of this textured sterling silver or high karat gold are joined together using a technique called fusing - (metal joined together using a torch at high temperatures without solder), Ryan cuts out sections of the layered sheets to create each ring. 24kt gold is fused to the front and back surface of the ring, further adding to its uniqueness. Then a strip of 22 karat gold is fused onto the back of the silver giving a more sensuous feel to the skin and creating a more durable ring. Finally, 18k pale yellow gold frames are soldered to the top and bottom edges of the ring following its contour. Each ring is then polished and put into a solution to darken the silver. It is polished again to highlight some of the ridges in the silver. This surface patina will change over time according to the wearers skin chemistry and these natural skin oils will give the ring a unique luster.

About this Artist

Marne Ryan

"I love playing with fire, suspending the rules of what can't be done with metal and integrating the elegance of form and function within the barely controlled chaos of my life. I construct each piece from fused sheets of textured and patterned sterling silver and high karat gold."

Raised on a tree farm in East Marlborough Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Marne Ryan credits her early life experiences with a profound influence on her later career. "My mother taught me to appreciate the elegance and drape of finely made fabrics. My father, a test pilot, flew us through the clouds, and the land would flow below, disclosing the earth's patterns and formations."

Ryan begins each piece with very thin gauge silver, either cutouts from scrap or sheet run through the wire mill to create furrows in the metal. These pieces are then repeatedly folded, milled, rolled, and fused to produce additional depth and texture. Once she achieves the desired texture and pattern, Ryan cuts the form from the many-layered sheet.

After receiving her B.F.A. from Moore College of Art, Ryan went immediately into the commercial jewelry world. While rolling out scrap metal for the shop, she chanced upon a technique--and the random textures created with it--that would later come to form a large part of her distinctive style.
