Tom Nakashima

"Painter and printmaker Tom Nakashima combines color and texture to create spellbinding compositions open to myriad interpretations."

Born to a Japanese-American father and an Irish-Canadian mother, Nakashima draws upon sources from both traditional Japanese art and modern European masters. As he grew up during World War II, members of his extended family were being held in internment camps--something that has become a major theme in the artist's allegorical work.

Nakashima has exhibited his work in museums, universities, and galleries across the United States and Japan.

The works shown here are vitreographs and were created in collaboration with Harvey Littleton at Littleton Studies, using the technique of printing from glass.
