"Moose in the Woods"

Metal Sculpture

Created by Ben Gatski
The 'Moose in the Woods' mounted head is made with recycled farm machinery and reclaimed wood. The metal used for the head is thick steel from weathered farm machinery. The head pattern is hand drawn on the metal with soapstone and cut with a hand held plasma cutter. The shapes are then hand hammered and arc welded together to form the head. The head is mounted on a recycled corn planter disk. The horns are cut from a large block of wood and shaped by hand.

This Moose is sealed with a water-based enamel. Each head will have subtle variations. They are cut by hand and each piece of metal has slight color differences.

It can be hung with a nail or screw.

Care: Wipe clean with a damp cloth. You can maintain a shiny metal look [entirely optional] by applying a clear metal enamel, available in a spray can at your local hardware store.

About this Artist

Ben Gatski

"We use simple hand tools to honor the enduring traditions of art and agriculture."

Ben and Kate Gatski are a husband-and-wife team. Their lives past and present inspire their work, and both were raised in creative families. Today they live on a hill that overlooks the Gatski family farm. Ben enjoys milking a few dairy cows by hand each morning and raising heritage pigs. The Gatskis' metalwork is fueled by their passion and knowledge of farming.

Ben collects farm machinery that can no longer be used. It is torn apart with wrenches, saws, and sometimes torches, and thrown in the back of their old pick up truck. He brings it home to his small rural shop. The patterns are hand drawn on the metal with soapstone and cut with a hand-held plasma cutter. The pieces are then welded together with an arc welder.

Ben began welding at the age of thirteen, when he was given a welder by his father. He began experimenting with welding pieces of farm equipment together. At the age of nineteen, he was building small birds and other sculptures for family friends. Aside from a vocational welding short course completed just a few years ago, he is entirely self taught.

An Amazing Work of Art
I cannot get over the workmanship and quality of this Moose in the Woods. It surpassed any hope I had of it being a nice piece. The wood used for his antlers is beautiful (solid & substantial). I plan to put my moose on the cedar and brick front of our house beneath the overhang. He is amazing. I would encourage anyone to purchase one of the art pieces. Yes, it says it's from farm machinery but it is CLASS. I know I will be purchasing another piece for indoors. You will be pleased with your piece and you won't regret spending the money! Enjoy!!
