"Pedestal Table - Narcissus"

Metal Side Table

Created by David M Bowman and Reed C Bowman
One of a Kind
Reed Bowman's pedestal table is a clean, contemporary design, with great visual mass, ideal for craftsman decor or modern homes. Its shape calls to mind both ancient architecture and prehistoric megaliths, interpreted through a modern craftman's eye.

Each table is constructed from brass sheet, patinaed, and bolted together, in the manner we use for wallpieces. Including the top, the table is about 23" tall - ideal as a sofa end table. The glass top is 15" square, and the base tapers from 13" to 10".

This table is a collaboration between the artists, father and son. The face which looks up out of the table is repoussé copper - copper sheet hammered into shape freehand, with no forms or molds - and as such is one of a kind. David creates the repoussé faces sometimes featured in the artists' work, while the overall table design is Reed's.

This table is not recommended for outdoor use.

About this Artist

David M Bowman and Reed C Bowman

"My sense of form and composition comes from close and long study of natural forms, architecture from all periods, the compositions of the masters of painting, and the work of other contemporary and ancient craftspeople."

David M. Bowman Studio consists of two people: David Mills Bowman and his son, Reed Christopher Bowman. David and Reed craft most pieces together. They construct all pieces by hand, with hand tools and simple machines. No part of the production is ever hired out, nor does the studio take in work to produce or patina parts for other artists' designs. Wallpieces are one of a kind.

All of their work is produced from brass sheet and rod, formed into shape, and brazed together using an oxyacetylene welding torch. David and Reed mix patina chemicals from scratch and apply them by hand.

David began working in metal in 1971, near the time Reed was born; he first made silver jewelry, and later moved on to brass belt buckles, then to larger pieces in patinated brass. Over the years, David has worked alone or with different assistants, but he has worked exclusively with Reed since the mid-1990s.

"My work with wallpieces reflects my interest in achieving balance in asymmetrical forms. I enjoy the constraints of working with our simple tools and limited palette of patinas."
