Fabricated from stainless steel, this watertight vase is heat treated to attain the bronze color. Vertical stripes are hand drawn with a welder, bringing out the iridescent colors from the metal.

Michael Szabo

"Through a process informed by accident and exploration, I search for the organic roots hidden in my industrial materials."

Michael Szabo has always been fascinated by nature's process of object making. His own work retains a similar honesty and simplicity of process that is co-dependent on his materials. He approaches industrial materials and processes with the innocence often found in nature as well as in the artist. A balance of accident and intention comes across visually as a melding of organic and industrial forms, rich with texture and color derived from the natural reactions between his metal and his methodology.

Szabo's work is fabricated primarily from stainless steel and bronze. His vases and other functional works are fabricated from sheet metal. Separate shapes are welded together and seamlessly finished. Various welding process and sometimes patina are used to create texture and color on the surface. His unique designs and treatment of metal often defy standard processes and finishes of the material.

Michael Szabo Graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in sculpture. After returning to his home state of California, Michael became director of the Metals division at Summit Springs Design. By combining the industrial and functional techniques required in this position with his own artistically intuitive process, he developed the unique style that now defines his work. In 2005 he opened his own studio in San Francisco where he continues to reside and create.
