"Deer Head"

Metal Wall Art

Created by Ben Gatski
The Deer Head is created entirely from recycled farm machinery. The metal used for the head is thick steel from weathered farm machinery. The antlers start out as flat pieces of rusty metal. They are hand hammered into shape and ground smooth. The head pattern is hand drawn on the metal with soapstone and cut with a hand held plasma cutter. The shapes are then arc welded together to form the head. The head is mounted on a recycled corn planter disk.

The metal is sealed with a water-based enamel. This piece can be hung inside or out. Each head will have subtle variations. They are cut by hand and each piece of metal has slight color differences.

It can be hung with a nail or screw.

About this Artist

Ben Gatski

"We use simple hand tools to honor the enduring traditions of art and agriculture."

Ben and Kate Gatski are a husband-and-wife team. Their lives past and present inspire their work, and both were raised in creative families. Today they live on a hill that overlooks the Gatski family farm. Ben enjoys milking a few dairy cows by hand each morning and raising heritage pigs. The Gatskis' metalwork is fueled by their passion and knowledge of farming.

Ben collects farm machinery that can no longer be used. It is torn apart with wrenches, saws, and sometimes torches, and thrown in the back of their old pick up truck. He brings it home to his small rural shop. The patterns are hand drawn on the metal with soapstone and cut with a hand-held plasma cutter. The pieces are then welded together with an arc welder.

Ben began welding at the age of thirteen, when he was given a welder by his father. He began experimenting with welding pieces of farm equipment together. At the age of nineteen, he was building small birds and other sculptures for family friends. Aside from a vocational welding short course completed just a few years ago, he is entirely self taught.

Beautiful Art
I purchased this as a gift for my son and daughter in law. They recently renovated a barn in New York State and the deer head is a perfect addition to a state of the art structure. Its good enough for Architectural Digest. They love the sculpture and I do.

Disappointing
The piece I received looks like a gimpy cousin of the picture, with smaller and differently angled antlers. Although of similar style and workmanship, it does not fit the space it was meant for since it has different dimensions from the advertised ones (22in H, 19in W). The website's response was that these are indeed the 'subtle variations' indicated in the description and that if I want specific dimensions, I can commission an individual piece to the artist. I must say I'm a little shocked at this experience and would strongly advise anyone considering buying this or a comparable piece to ask for a picture of a specific item they're buying to make an informed decision.

Whimsical Deer Wins Hearts
We're hanging this whimsical deer head over our outdoor fireplace, a location that is seen and appreciated year round. The piece is substantial and the material references an agricultural/hunting context yet is inorganic and man-made. The construction is substantial as you can see the welded connections and bolts. The mix of metal finishes adds visual interest to an already interesting piece. We love this deer and only wish it was slightly larger.

Beautiful addition to our menagerie.
This is a wonderful and character-full piece of art. It makes us smile every time we look at it, and we look at it a lot because it's above our fireplace.
