About this Artist

Annie Waldrop

"I create one of a kind doll dresses that reflect a love of nature as it relates to fashion. As a child, I remember marveling over my mother's ball gowns which she had stored in our attic. Combining the elements of nature, fashion and childhood nostalgia are what inspire this work."

Annie Waldrop's work is based on a love of materials. Her memory of the fabric of childhood Easter dresses and her wonder over a neighbor's almost magical garden inspire the unique textures used in her current work. Contemplative walks in the woods where working materials are found are seen as "gifts" to be incorporated into the sculptures.

Each dress begins with a handmade wire structure. Various materials are then added in order to create the suggestion of a fantasy frock. The artist has carefully chosen elements from nature that reflect a love of texture as it relates to fabric resulting in one of a kind relief sculptures that, when viewed collectively, mimic the idea of a runway collection.

Annie Waldrop received her MFA in sculpture from The Maryland Institute of Art. She also studied at Parson's School of Design in New York City where she made and sold hats. Annie has been featured on national TV for her hat designs. Eventually she shifted her focus to fine art incorporating her knowledge of fashion with a love of materials. She currently lives and works in Virginia.
