About this Artist

Sandra Humphries

"Creating a monotype is a different process for me from planning a painting. Monotypes are intuitive, totally unstructured, exhilarating, and I am never sure what will emerge. I strive to place elements of the design within the artwork to reflect balance and depth."

Sandra Humphries always knew she wanted to be an artist, and from an early age drew and painted the woods and harbors of Connecticut where she grew up. After moving to New Mexico she fell in love with the colors, light, and shapes of the Southwest landscape. The quickness of creating monotypes forces her to reduce her emotions and memories of the landscape to simple design, color, and texture.

A monotype first begins as a painting on a metal plate, using the vivid colors of oil-based printer's inks, and brushes, brayers, and other tools to create texture. When the design is finished, the metal plate is covered with acid-free print paper and run through a press, transferring the entire image to the paper. All her monotypes are one-of-a-kind originals, printed at Tamarind Institute, UNM.

From early childhood Humphries studied art through Saturday morning art classes and by visiting museums. She received a BFA degree from Rhode Island School of Design and an MA from the University of New Mexico. Working with master printers at Tamarind Institute, UNM introduced her to monotypes.
