Nicolette Jelen
"My work reflects a concrete yet mystical vision of the Mediterranean and upstate New York."
Nicolette Jelen spent her early childhood in post-war Tangier, a city full of abandoned mansions she snuck into to imagine ghosts. Like a haunted house full of shadows and streams of dusty light, her work explores light and dark and all the qualities in between.
Whether using a multi-media process of giclée and collage on handmade paper or more traditional techniques such as mezzotint or engraving, Jelen's artwork reflects the harmony, imagination and fragility of a child in a ruined Moroccan estate or a woman on the New England countryside.
