"My work is emotionally driven. I create a landscape that holds an emotion, so that the viewer is not identifying with a certain individual but a feeling. "

Cathy Locke explores a shift in our perception of our own identities. The figures in her work appear to be in a timeless void, this is inspired by the Buddhist concept where there is no beginning and no end. Locke distills her work down to a single emotion. In her distillation process the figures become more and more abstracted, so that the viewer is not identifying with a certain individual but an experience or emotion. Locke's work is all about transformation, from all of life's great emotions.

Ms. Locke combines both representational figurative and abstract painting. She works in oil, mixed media, graphite, acrylic and pastel. She builds up layers to create a depth and mood. Locke will often let paint run down a canvas and even destroy a completed part of the painting. The emotional concept of not being able to control a situation is all part of her painting process. In her work she often uses modeling paste and acrylic polymer products to build up textures. In some cases she might burn these textures to create a feeling.

Ms. Locke began her education with traditional art history, including studying in Europe at the Art Academy in Paris, with extensive study at the Louvre, as well as the London Polytechnic Institute with work at the Tate Gallery. In the fall of 2003, Ms. Locke studied art in Russia. She holds a BFA from Art Center College of Design and a MFA from the Art Academy of Art University.
