Karen Sam Norgard and Virginia Wynne, metalsmith

"I find great pleasure in organizing numerous small forms and playing with color, texture, and form. My love of design and my hope to create jewelry from which others may derive enjoyment drive my desire to make works of adornment."

Karen-Sam Norgard's youth was spent in her family flower store. Her home was filled with the beautiful wallpaper patterns from the 1940s. Floral inspiration was everywhere. Academic pursuits led to degrees in the areas of painting, printmaking, and ceramic sculpture. Work in various design industries sharpened her design skills. Today, Norgard's beadworks bring together the influences of painting, sculpture, and design, the inspiration of floral forms, and the desire to carry on, and advance, a made-by-hand tradition.

Norgard's jewelry incorporates a variety of media including freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals, Czech pressed glass and Japanese seed beads. The artist integrates Native American, African, and Victorian bead-weaving techniques to construct her pieces. The works evolve slowly as each bead is individually selected and added to the form, resulting in a piece with rich visual and tactile qualities.
