Fabric & Care:

  • To care for your crushed silk garment simply hand wash in cool water with a mild soap
  • towel dry and while still damp crush it into a ball
  • wrap it up into the cloth or bag provided and allow it to dry to the tightness and shape you desire

About this Artist

Carol Lee Shanks

"The way we feel on the inside should be reflected by the layer we choose to wear on the outside."

Making clothes is Carol Lee Shanks's passion. She was taught to sew by her mother and her aunt at the age of ten. She could, and still does, spend most of her time exploring her imagination through her hands as she sews.

Shanks is compelled by the way shapes and layers of cloth move on the body. Cloth is the foundation of her inspiration, and it is for this reason that the artist tends to work with geometric, architectural elements. Most recently Shanks has become fascinated with piecing and patching smaller shapes onto the clothing to create more surface interest. The selvage edges have become a trademark element in her work.

While attending the University of California-Davis in the mid-seventies, Shanks was fortunate to have been taught by some of the leaders in the costume and textile field. The artist attributes the expansion of her imagination to her studies at Davis and the exposure to a broader picture of the world. Through the window of textiles, Shanks learned of cultures far and wide, and the exposure to diverse people and places still plays a part in the way Shanks creates her engaging silhouettes.

Great concept & fabric, not flattering
I really wanted to love this tunic. But I had to send it back. The crinkled silk fabric is wonderful and light for summer, and would travel well too. But the tunic lacks any shape and, with its relatively high neckline, this style could only look truly flattering on a tall, stick-thin woman. I am average (5'6" and 150 lbs) and it made me look huge. Too bad. With a lower neckline, and slightly nipped-in fabric at the waistline, this would be a winner and I'd buy one in every color!

If I only owned one piece of clothing, t
As it says in the description, I really think I could wear this every day. I bought it for a trip, and managed to wear it to dinner with jewelry and nice pants, during the day with leggings and sandals, and in the hotel room in place of a nightgown (really!) And yes, I washed it and it was easy to get the crinkles back. I only wish it was available in more colors, not that I wear much more than grey and black!
