Laurie Thal
"Glass is an incredibly exciting and beautiful material to work with. It suits my temperament as well . . . fast paced, using lots of energy."
Laurie Thal likens glass blowing to practicing yoga. Secure in the ebb and flow of her own energy, she enters a trancelike state and performs her measured and focused dance. She begins with an idea of a shape that blends color with the fluid qualities of glass. At times, unforeseen circumstances alter her intentions - sometimes ruining a piece, sometimes greatly enhancing it. Over time, she has developed greater skill at controlling both the process and the final outcome. Thal collaborates with artist Lia Kass, who completes some pieces with intricate etched designs created with sandblasting techniques.
Thal's art reflects the peace and harmony of the Teton Mountain range. She chooses to live in the midst of its beauty, striving to create lyric vessel forms that capture the sublime quality of the place.
