About this Artist

David Hurwitz

"I like to work with organic, sculptural forms, and how they interplay and intersect with the functional aspects of my furniture designs."

Furniture maker David Hurwitz believes that wood can be a very sensual medium, depending on the approach and how it is used. He works with organic, sculptural forms and strives for a dynamic interaction between the elements of his furniture designs. He likes his work to project a warm presence that is inviting to the user.

A true craftsman, David designs and builds his pieces one at a time at his studio in Vermont, using hand carving along with traditional methods of furniture construction and joinery - in the Danish tradition. His designs incorporate carving and shaping and he likes to explore texture and surface treatment, often using paint. Each piece is made using the highest quality materials available, with meticulous attention to detail. When purchasing a David Hurwitz original, you acquire a work of superior craftsmanship, designed and built to last many generations.

David has been doing woodworking since the age of six, and has been a professional woodworker since 1988. He has a BFA (1992) in woodworking and furniture design from the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, New York. David's work has been featured recently in 500 Tables by Lark Books.
