The From the Bay blanket chest celebrates the coastal Chesapeake Bay! Made from bent laminations of sawn solid wood, the legs are
ebonized white oak, the side panels are carved tulip poplar front and back, accentuated with milk paint, the end panels are
bookmatched cherry crotch wood, the top is a lamination of bookmatched walnut and a cherry core, and the bottom is bookmatched solid walnut. The interior walls are lined with aromatic red cedar.
In this chest, Pitts continues his work in a theme of sweeping legs and curved surfaces, but now with a palette for his carvings. The front has a carved, whimsical Chesapeake Bay scene with spooky eyes peering out of the swampy reeds at a Canadian Goose making a low pass. On the back, a bullfrog has an afternoon snack while the Mama of this little tasty treat bears down for an attack, red eyes aglow!
The gently curved hardwood laminations are from local Chesapeake Bay trees that have fallen in storms or were dying and given new life with my sawmill and solar drying kiln. The finely finished shellac polish is a joy to touch. Open the blanket chest on its fine brass hardware and take in the soothing aroma of the red cedar laminations on the inner walls. A wonderful piece that will bring years of joy to a home! Branded inside, and signed and numbered underneath. Custom carvings for the sides can be arranged.
This piece should need only an occasional dusting and an occasional coat of wax on the shellaced surfaces. Sunlight will gently darken the cherry to a golden brown. As with any fine furniture piece, avoid contact with liquids.
